How does Luke's enforced isolation change his relationship with the members of his family - his mother, father and brothers?
It changes the relationship with his family he lives with because he wouldn't just have to talk about stuff he did at home he could talk about other stuff. It changes his relationship with his other family because he doesn't even know them! He would know them if he was not a third child and was able to go outside.
If I were stuck inside with my family 24/7 I would feel a lot closer to them since I have no one else to talk to. I think i would have A LOT more to talk with my family about because I can't experience what they feel.
@ Hope E, The comment you did on the 20th made me think about the family thing completely different. I agree that you would be much closer to your family because you had no friends and no distractions to keep you from talking to them.
The isolation changes the relationship between him and his family members because he is always hidden now and can't take a single step into the light. The shades in his home are now being kept up because people were getting the hint that something was going on underneath the shades.
I agree with you about how he can not take any steps outside but, how do you know people were having suspicions about the shades being up all the time? They might just think that Luke's family leaves the shades up Because they are always up.
His enforced isolation changes his relationships with his family members by either becoming even closer to them or farther away. With his mother and father, he becomes closer because they understand what he's going through and how horrible it must feel. With his brothers Mark and Matthew, their relationship is being torn apart by his isolation. They are angry because he doesn't have to go to school, and doesn't have to do as many chores.
Maddi, why is his connection with his brothers worse than his mother? And because of what we have read so far in the book, Luke's father never visits him, so how do they get close? Also, because of Luke's mother's job, arn't they drifting farther apart, instead of closer?
It changes Luke's relationship with his family because there the only people he knows other than Jen wich he has now met and is friends with. The ways he acts with them is different because he doesn't get mad with them because his family is the only thing he has. The reason that his family is the only thing he has is because he has no one else to talk to or to get food and pretection his family tries to pretect him but the can't do much although they try.-Andrea-Feb-20-2014

His relationship changes with his family because they're always out of the house and he is stuck inside and he can't even take a step outside because he is sacred his parents would find out or even worse the government.
Luke's forced isolation changes his relationships with his family because he is always separated from them. He doesn't get to do anything with them, even eat at the dinner table with them. Granted they come into his room sometimes, for a short while, but the longer he is isolated, the farther they drift apart. His family gets to leave the house and do other things, while Luke sits in the attic.
Luke's enforced isolation effects his relationship between his family, because of him being a shadow child. This effects his interaction between his family, since he has nothing to talk about, because he has no privileges in the world into the light due to being an illegal child. His enforced isolation doesn't give him anything special to talk about. If his family were to talk about their outside interactions it would might lead Luke into major depression thinking about how dull and meaning less his life is.
Melany I disagree with you with Luke being depressed about thinking of outside during a family conversation about it. First of all, I don't think his family would bring up that topic because they wouldn't want him to feel left out. And if his family were to talk about that he could use the experience he had when he was outside to talk about what they were talking about.
Luke's relationship with his family changed because he can't go outside unless nobody is out there. He also has to hide in the attic and he can't make any noises because his parents think that the people from outside and they might call the government to take Luke away. He also can't have breakfast that much with his family unless no one is outside and can see him while he is inside. Which means that he has to eat breakfast or lunch on the stairs and can't be with his family during that time. His relationship has changed with his brothers because they either don't want to play with him or he doesn't want to play with them.
