Luke's family is terrified of the government. Why? What are some of the tactics the government employs to make ordinary families like his feel powerless?
Luke's family is terrified of the government, because if they found Luke they would take Luke away from them. The family of Luke really love him so they want nothing bad to happen to him. The government is also raising taxes, and taking away things from families so that any ordinary family would feel less powerless.
I would've said exactly what you said, Andrew, Luke's family was poor enough already when they took away their hogs and raised the taxes. Of course his family would be scared of someone that powerful and heartless to take away something from someone when they barely have anything to start with.

Luke’s family is terrified of the government because if the government sees Luke, something bad will happen to Luke. If the government sees Luke, Luke’s parents would of paid a fortune or maybe the government says that he would not want their money and would do something bad to Luke. This would make Luke’s parents feel powerless and then the government would do a terrible thing to Luke. If he’s parents are powerless, then they can not help Luke because the government has the power to do that to poor Luke. This is why the family is terrified of the government. -Fernanda S. 2/20/14
Of course Luke's family would be terrified of the government. If anyone ever sees that Luke is the third child and they might take him away and punish the family arresting them or something. That's why they have him all locked up in an attic having him doing absolutely nothing.
Luke's family is afraid of the government because they can take Luke away from them. Everyone in that house will get arrested. The penalty for harboring an illegal child is a fine of five million dollars or a execution.
I agree America they would probably be penalties, but how do we know that all of them will get arrested? What other penalties could happen if they found out about Luke?
You all talk about punishment in the way that its really only physical damage like possibly losing possessions or family. Say they lose Luke if they got caught, it would not only hurt them physically but emotionally as well.

Carlos I disagree with you because the government wouldn't probably kill Luke but they would take him away from his family. They would also get fined and into a lot of trouble with the law. My point was that they wouldn't take Luke's life for just being a third child but his family would receive the consequences.

Luke and his family are terrified of the government because if he finds out that his family is harboring an illegal child, Luke can be taken away and killed or the family will have to pay a really big fine but I think Luke has been hidden away for long enough that he doesn't care as much if he gets caught as much as before.

The are terrified because Luke is a "third child". They have to make him live in the attic that is hot. Also they can't let him play anymore because the woods are being cut down therefore people can see him.

His parents would of course feel powerless due to the lack of power they really have. His family doesn't want Luke to be taken away.
