Why does the official letter Dad received spell trouble for the family? What actions do you think he should take?
The official letter says that Luke's family has to give up their hogs. Of course, this would affect the family because they kind of depend on the hogs for their income and with the hogs gone, their income would dwindle. If I were Luke's father, I would write a formal persuasive letter to the government explaining why we would need the hogs. Then again, in the classroom, we discussed that their government wasn't really considerate about their people and probably wouldn't care.
The official letter spells trouble because when they get the letter and read it, it's proclaiming they need to give up their hogs because of the new homes. The owners don't want to be smelling 'hog' or 'farm' while living in their new house where Luke's old forest used to be. His dad should either write a very formal letter to the government, but Luke's family knows that won't work. So they other option would be to get a job. Both of the parents. Meaning Luke would be home alone. The hogs are the only income that Luke's family has. When Luke's dad and two brothers are at school or work his mom is the one who is home with Luke. But if both of the parents get a job Luke would be home alone for several hours. At least until his brothers or mom or even dad gets home.
I understand you think Luke's parents should get jobs, Courtney, but do you really think leaving Luke home alone is a good idea? Maybe one of the workers decides to break in expecting no one then finding Luke. Think about the possible outcomes of leaving Luke home alone.
I understand you perfectly Jessica,but that sounds unlikely that a worker would just say,"Oh I wonder what's in that house over there." I would think if both of the parents got jobs they would tell him to hide in the basement or the attic or the air vents for a few hours until Matt and Mark return from school.Alec N.
The letter dad received says that the family has to give up all their hogs.Without the hogs the family wouldn't have food. Without food they might die of starvation. If I were dad I would write a letter back refusing to give out the hogs-Alexis R.
The official letter Father receive said that thy would have to sell their pigs. This will cause trouble for the family because for one they will lose a food source. Two, they will lose money for selling baby piglets. Finally, they may have to get jobs to get money,which will leave Luke home alone , which is not a right move to make because what if a worker or a well-dressed guy comes in for food and/or a drink and sees Luke he might call the police and get him in trouble. So, Father should get a high-paying job and Mother can stay home with Luke.
I do agree but what if his dad can't find a job since that's his only paying job. Also what will happen with the extra land the family has since they own a farm. Will they keep it or will they sell it since they won't need it anymore?

This could lead to death of the family does not have things to survive. I think Luke's dad should get another job. Maybe move if he has to. That would also lead to giving up Luke. Unless they can somehow move him without no one noticing.
I agree with Andrew, being a farmer does not give you a lot of money to feed the entire family. The only thing is, what if nobody wants to give him a job anymore.
How would they die Alexis they still have chickens and wheat and if Father gets a job they can go to the store and buy food. Think about that, please before suggesting that they will die.

The letter that dad received said that he would have to give up his hogs, because the people that live in the fancy houses said they cant stand the smell of the hogs.That makes trouble for Luke and his family because they would be loosing animals that could be used to make money by selling the animals. Or if not dad could be using the hogs to feed his family and his self. I think dad should try to take the smell away so the people wouldn't be complaining anymore and then dad could probably keep the hogs. -Brian M.
The letter that Luke's dad received is obviously trouble for the entire family because they depend on the hogs. In the story Luke's mom said, "Those pigs are our bread and butter." The actions that Luke's dad should do is give some of the pigs to the government and some of them to keep but they should hide them.
The official letter they got was about to get rid of their pigs. Though their whole time living on a farm they depended on the pigs for money and probably food.The actions that Dad should take is to keep and ask the government if he could keep at least some or all.

ReplyDeleteThat would be a very bold to write to the government refusing to give up the pigs. What if the government say no? What would Luke's dad do then?
